The Naughty Boy

Along time ago, there lived an old poet, a thoroughly kind old poet.

As he was sitting one evening in his room, a dreadful storm arose without, and the rain streamed down from heaven.

But the old poet sat warm and comfortable in his chimney-corner, where the fire blazed and the roasting apple hissed.

"Those who have not a roof over their heads will be wetted to the skin," said the good old poet.

"Oh let me in! Let me in! I am cold, andI'm so wet!" exclaimed suddenly a child that stood crying at the door and knocking for admittance, while the rain poured down, and the wind made all the windows rattle.

"Poor thing!" said the old poet, as he went to open the door.

There stood a little boy, quite naked, and the water ran down from his long golden hair.

He trembled with cold, and had he not come into a warm room he would most certainly have perished in the frightful tempest.

"Poor child!" said the old poet, as he took the boy by the hand.

"Come in, come in, and I will soon restore thee!

Thou shalt have wine and roasted apples, for thou art verily a charming child!"

And the boy was so really.

His eyes were like two bright stars; and although the water trickled down his hair, it waved in beautiful curls.

He looked exactly like a little angel, but he was so pale, and his whole body trembled with cold.

He had а nice little bow in his hand, but it was quite spoiled by the rain, and the tints of his many-colored arrows ran one into the other.

The old poet seated himself beside his hearth, and took the little fellow on hisар.

He squeezed the water out of hisdripping hair, warmed his handsbetween his own, and boiled for himsome sweet wine.

Then the boy recovered, his cheeks again grew rosy.

He jumped down from the lap where he was sitting, and danced round the kind old poet.

"You are a merry fellow," said the old man. "What's your name?'

"My name is Cupid," answered the boy."Don't you know me? There lies my bow; it shoots well, l can assure you!

Look, the weather is now clearing up, and the moon is shining clear again through the window."

"Why, your bow is quite spoiled," said the old poet.

and he took the bow in his hand and examined it on every side.

"Oh, it is dry again, and is not hurt at all; the string is quite tight.I will try it directly."

And he bent his bow, took aim, and shot an arrow at the old poet, right into his heart.

"You see now that my bow was not spoiled," said he laughing; and away he ran.

The naughty boy, to shoot the old poet in that way; he who had taken him into his warm room, who had treated him so kindly, and who had given him warm wine and the very best apples!

The poor poet lay on the earth and wept, for the arrow had really flown into his heart.

"Fie!" said he. "How naughty a boy Cupid is!

I will tell all children about him, that they may take care and not play with him, for he will only cause them sorrow and many a heartache."

And all good children to whom he related this story, took great heed of this naughty Cupid; but he made fools of them sill, for he is astonishingly cunning.

When the university students come from the lectures, he runs beside them in a black coat, and with a book under his arm.

It is quite impossible for them to know him, and they walk along with him arm in arm, as if he, too, were a student like themselves; and then, unperceived, he thrusts an arrow to their bosom.

When the young maidens come from being examined by the clergyman, or goto church to be confirmed, there he is again close behind them.

Yes, he is forever following people.

At the play, he sits in the great chandelier and burns in bright flames, so that people think it is really a flame, but they soon discover it is something else.

He roves about in the garden of the palace and upon the ramparts.

Yes, once he even shot your father and mother right in the heart.

Ask them only and you will hear what they'll tell you.

Oh, he is a naughty boy, that Cupid; you must never have anything to do with him.

He is forever running after everybody.

Only think, he shot an arrow once at your old grandmother!

But that is a long time ago, and it is all past now; however, a thing of that sort she never forgets.

Fie, naughty Cupid! But now you know him, and you know, too, how ill-behaved he is!

How does technology help people tell stories?

Um, technology helps tell stories? Hmm, well, I think the prime example of how technology helps storytellers to tell their stories is the medium of video.

I mean, TV has been around for a long time, but in essence, it’s a video, but videos have come a long way, and now they are ubiquitous. So, to show a moving picture of any type requires technology.

Um, lighting is another type of technology that’s important, whether it’s a play in a theatre or some type of video, lighting is always critical. And so I guess the same is true for recording voice. Microphones and recorders are vital for the storyteller to project their voice.

Like I said, technology is everywhere in this type of field, even in the printing of books. And one can say, even in the telling of a story sitting around a campfire, fire also being a technology. So, technology fundamentally helps by creating the medium and the mood for the storyteller.

  • in essence 实质上
  • come a long way 取得很大进展;有很大进步

Do you prefer to read e-books or printed books?

Definitely reading paper books. Although when working, I need to read a lot of digital materials and e-books to save time, so in that way, I like reading on the computer, but when it comes to reading for pleasure, definitely I prefer paper books because I like the process of reading.

Holding the book, turning the pages, making notes, even the smell of the paper…I simply love books.

Why are mystery novels so popular nowadays?

Hmm, not sure, I wasn’t aware actually that they are so popular. But come to think of it, for kids they seem to be popular I guess, like Harry Potter or for older people, like Sherlock Holmes.

Hmm, I guess the main reason for their popularity is that they appeal to people’s curiosity. Such novels have lots of suspense and to solve them quickly, readers have to do some analysis themselves.

For instance, while reading mystery-crime novels, readers are having to constantly find clues and hints and reasons behind the motives of a crime and who might be the one that committed it. For this reason, it’s hard to put a mystery novel down until one has a definitive answer.

  • come to think of it 说起来;想起来
  • appeal to people's curiosity
  • the motives of a crime

What kinds of stories do children like?

Well, I mentioned Harry Potter before, I think that book, like fantasies, are popular with kids of both genders, while for most boys, I think they’re more into superhero stories, you know, where the world’s controlled by some evil power and a hero with a gift of some type or supernatural capability appears, and ends with fighting and defeating the evil entity, which is why I think Harry Potter is so popular with boys.

And for girls, they tend to prefer fantasies, also like Harry Potter, but you know, even usually more so, like stories where a princess is saved by a prince or hero and they live happily ever after.

  • a gift of some type

What kinds of novels are suitable for a film adaption?

Hmm, kinds? Hmm, there’s a lot I guess. But off the top of my head, I would say world classics are good for being made into films, such as romantic novels like Pride and Prejudice and detective novels like Sherlock Holmes.

And another would be science fiction I think, like The Three-Body Problem. I think all these types are fitting to be made into movies. Oh, another that comes to mind would be mysteries such as The Da Vinci Code, they can make great films I think.

  • off the top of my head
  • The Da Vinci Code 《

Fairy Tale

曾经用过的有: Fairy Tale (是李健的“传奇”);Take Me to Your Heart (是张学友的“吻别”);I Walk this Road Alone (是崔健的“一无所有”);Betrayal (是周传雄的“黄昏”)等。

In that misty morning when I saw your smiling face.

You only looked at me and I was yours.

But when I turned around you were nowhere to be seen.

You have walked away and closed the door.

When will I see you again?

When will the sky stop to rain?

When will the stars start to shine?

When will I know that you are mine?

Did I ever meet you in the sunshine?

And when we were both a thousand years away.

Did I ever hold you in the moonlight?

Did we make every minute last another day?

On a cold December night, I gave my heart to you and by the summer you were gone.

Now as the days grow older and the stars will start to dim.

All I have are memories and this song.

When will I see you again?

When will the sky stop to rain?

When will the stars start to shine?

When will I know that you are mine?

Did I ever meet you in the sunshine?

And when we were both a thousand years away.

Did I ever hold you in the moonlight?

Did we make every minute last another day?

When will I see you again?

When will the sky stop to rain?

When will the stars start to shine?

When will I know that you are mine?

In that misty morning when I saw your smiling face.
