What is standard English?什么是标准英语？Is it spoken in Britain, the US, Canada, Australia, India and New Zealand?是在英国、美国、加拿大、澳大利亚、印度、新西兰所说的英语吗？Believe it or not, there is no such thing as standard English.信不信由你，（世界上）没有什么标准英语。Many people believe the English spoken on TV and the radio is standard English.许多人认为，电视和收音机里所说的就是标准英语。This is because in the early days of radio, those who reported the news were expected to speak excellent English.这是因为在早期的电台节目里，人们期望新闻播音员所说的英语是最好的英语。However, on TV and the radio you will hear differences in the way people speak.然而，在电视和收音机里，你也会听出人们在说话时的差异。

● New money/old money ●

新贵（暴发户）/旧贵（富二代）

New money 按字面意思是新钱，但是在商务口语和日常口语表达中，“New money” 表示“暴发户”（非继承的钱财，新贵阶层），物质世界极大的丰富，但精神世界贫瘠。

Old money 字面意思是“旧钱或老钱”，在俚语中则是表示贵族的意思。与new money 相反，“old money”是祖传的财产、继承祖传财产的人，也就是我们现在时常说的“富二代”。

除此之外，“new money”还有其他几种略带褒义的含义：

1. 通过自己努力赚取财富的人，但这些人并非来自富裕的家庭。

2. 新注入的资金。

但在一般情况下，我们使用“暴发户”这个意思更多些。

● bury the hatchet ●

和解，重归于好

17世纪，美国当地有个习俗，如果交战双方将战斧埋在地下，那么就表明双方停战，就此和解。所以“bury the hatchet”字面意为把“战斧埋起来”，后被引申为“和解，重归于好”的意思。

● 例句 ●

That's true, we worked out the problem and decided to bury the hatchet.

是真的，我们已经解决了问题，并决定和解。

I think you should bury the hatchet and invite them to spend Christmas with you as you used to.

我认为你们应该和解，像往常一样邀请他们来与你共度圣诞节。

● eat no fish ●

忠实可靠的人

● in a nutshell ●

简而言之，简单来说

它来源于一个古老的故事。哲学家西塞罗曾目睹过一件物品，即被抄写在一张小小的羊皮纸上的荷马史诗《伊利亚特》。而这张羊皮纸竟然小得能装进核桃壳中。

可见《伊利亚特》的语言极为简练。因此“in a nutshell”后来也就表示“简而言之，简单来说”。

● kick off ●

开始

Kick off的意思是一项活动，或一个计划的开始。Kick off原来是用在足球比赛中的。每次比赛的开始都是由一个球队把球踢到另一个球队去。

不过现在这个俗语几乎可以用在任何方面，表达开始的意思。

Last night Michael Smith kicked off his campaign for the U.S. Senate.

昨晚，迈克尔斯密斯在这儿发表讲话，作为他竞选美国参议员竞选活动的开始。
