(2-Book1 Unit2)How to memorize words?

Speaking of English, many learners have trouble memorizing words and intend to give up. People say that English is not only unique and creative but also odd and confusing. For example, if harmless actions are the opposite of harmful actions, why are shameless and shameful behaviors the same? If downtown section and uptown section(or downstairs and upstairs)are an opposing pair, why is “burn up” equal to “burn down” ?

As an exchange student, I organized an online English-learning forum in which there are much useful learning resource. Not only can you post specific questions, but you can also broaden your vocabulary by reading posts, making comments, and contacting others. I also wrote a paper titled “Types of Word Formation Reflect Human’s Creativity”.

Adding a prefix or suffix. For instance, sculptor and sculpture take sculpt as root. Informal, invisible, incorrect have the same prefix, while seasick, airsick and carsick have the same suffix. Actually, this reminds me of my error in understanding homesick.

Combining two or more words. Interestingly, there is no ham in a hamburger, and there's no egg in eggplant either. Neither is there pine nor apple in pineapple. Delicious toad-in-the-hole is just sausages cooked in pancake. That’s why you should play safe with what you order, or you are rather likely to come arcoss misadventures.

Abbreviating. If selfie is short for self profile, can you guess the meaning of netizen? If “be right back” can be referred to as BRB, what does capitalized ASAP mean?

如果自拍照是自我形象的缩写,你能猜出netizen(net+citizen)的意思吗?如果“be right back” 能被说成是BRB,那大写的ASAP(as soon as possible)是什么意思呢?

In addition, we must recognise unfamiliar idioms based on context. Having butterflies in your stomach is as painful as having a frog in your throat. In addition to word formation and idiom, we should also be aware of cultural differences. The American English words such as “subway” “highway” “gas” “elevator” “apartment” and “first floor” are “underground” “motorway” “petrol” “lift” “flat” and “ground floor” in British English.)

美式英语中的单词 subway, highway, gas, elevator, apartment和first floor,在英式英语中是 underground, motorway, petrol, lift, flat和ground floor。

All above are exits from wicked words maze. Boot the negative feelings out and wind up your alarm, and you’ll find the entrance to ideal universities.

Passage1

Life in space will certainly take some getting used to! But the space station has been designed to keep the astronauts as comfortable as possible—the modules(舱) are roomy, bright, and kept at a constant 21℃. It’s important the crew members are comfortable because they’ll be busy aboard the station. In a typical workday, crew members will spend 14 hours working and exercising, 1.5 hours preparing and eating meals, and 8.5 hours sleeping. Here are some other fun facts about life aboard the station:

Food

Come mealtime, astronauts will have a special dining kitchen. Space food just keeps getting better—and more like food we enjoy here on Earth. In early space missions(任务), astronauts could eat only freeze-dried food that didn’t require any preparation. But the space station is equipped with water, microwave ovens, and refrigerators, allowing the folks on board to eat more “normal” types of food, including fruit, vegetables, and ice cream!

Sleep

Each crew member has a private room. With no gravity, they’ll need to tie themselves to their beds, or they will float away! That might sound like a strange way to sleep, but astronauts from past space missions report that sleeping in space is actually pretty great! Exercise

You might not think it, but exercise is even more important on the station than it is on Earth. There is not much gravity in space. Astronauts don’t stand up, sit down or walk in space, so their muscles and bones don’t have to work much—and this muscle and bone loss can be dangerous back on Earth. To fight this, astronauts on the station will exercise on bikes, rowing machines, and other equipment about two hours every day.

Clothing

Astronauts will have to wear special space suits while travelling aboard the U.S. shuttle or Russian rockets. But once they’re safe inside the space station, crew members can wear regular clothing. Of course, a specially designed, pressurized space suit is required for space walks. It has to bear flying pieces and protect the astronauts from dramatic temperature changes. It can range from -84℃ in the shadow of the station to 121℃ in the hot sun.

Personal Cleanliness

Simple tasks like brushing your teeth can be challenging in a weightless environment. A little water doesn’t flow in a stream. Astronauts will use a freshwater hose(软管) to take showers, shampoo, and wash off—then a second vacuum hose to suction(吸) off the dirty water. And how do you go to the bathroom in space? With a special “air toilet” that uses flowing air instead of water to get rid of waste.

Passage2

In February, the U. S. stated that its Mars explorer, Perseverance, landed successfully on the Red Planet. Perseverance is on a task to collect Martian soil and rocks as part of a search for signs of ancient life.

Perseverance landed in an area of Mars called Jezero Crater. Scientists believe the area has a large ancient lakebed. NASA considers the area a promising place to find possible signs of microbial life.

Perseverance carried to Mars a small experimental helicopter named Ingenuity. In April, NASA said Ingenuity had successfully completed a takeoff and landing on the planet. It said the flight was historic; it marked the first time any flying machines had performed a powered, controlled flight on another planet.

In July, British billionaire Richard Branson entered into space on a rocket plane built by Virgin Galactic, the space tourism company he created. Branson joined two pilots and three other task experts on the flight. Virgin Galactic aims to fly private citizens to the edge of space to experience a few minutes of weightlessness and observe the Earth.

A little over a week later, American billionaire Jeff Bezos flew to the edge of space on a rocket built by his company, Blue Origin. Three other people took the quick trip with him: Bezos’ brother, a Dutch teenager and an 82-year-old pilot.

The flights by Branson and Bezos officially started a new industry that promises any citizen the chance to visit space. Such trips will be costly, however. Virgin Galactic’s price for a single flight is $250,000. Blue Origin has not publicly announced its price. Both businesses have built operating bases, called spaceports, in the countryside areas of the U. S.

And earlier this month, Japanese billionaire Yusaku Maezawa arrived at the International Space Station(ISS), their destination where they stayed for 12 days. The businessman arrived along with an assistant aboard a Russian Soyuz spacecraft. The price of that trip has not been made public, but some reports guess it cost up to $50 million.

36.What is Virgin Galactic’s goal?

A.To search for life in space. B.To draw people’s attention to space.

C.To develop space tourism for the public. D.To support space exploration programs.

37.What do we know about Richard Branson and Jeff Bezos?

A.They traveled in space with their family. B.They went to the same place in space.

C.They tried to serve tourists in the countryside. D.They rode a spaceship built by their own company.

38.What is secret about the Japanese billionaire’s space travel?

A.Its cost. B.Its destination. C.Its travel period. D.Its transportation.

39.Which is the most suitable title for the text?

A.Expensive Space Tourism in the Future B.Signs of Ancient Life Discovered on Mars

C.Traveling in Space, Billionaires’ Game D.Progress on Mars and Rise in Space Tourists

Passage3

Chang’e-5 returned to Earth on December 16, 2020, carrying around 2 kilograms of rocks and soils from the moon. The successful mission (任务) marks a big step forward for China’s space industry.

“These samples will be a treasure chest!” Brad Jolliff, director of the McDonnell Center for the Space Sciences at Washington University, wrote in an email, “My hat is off to our Chinese colleagues for accomplishing a very difficult task, which will be beneficial to learning more about the moon.” The newly collected rocks come from a place close to the Mons Rumker that was believed to have been volcanic in ancient times. By comparison, the age of these samples are thought to be billions of years younger than those brought to Earth by Apollo astronauts in the 1970s. They will help scientists fill in a gap in knowledge about the history of the moon between roughly one billion and three billion years ago. They may also help scientists study the useful materials on the moon.

Chang’e-5 is the third phase of the Chinese lunar (月球) exploration project started in the early 2000s. Orbiters Chang’e-1 and 2 and the landing and roving missions Chang’e-3 and 4 marked the first two stages.

Chang’e-5 mission is much more challenging than previous missions. New challenges include the sampling and following stages. “We usually completed the rocket launching (发射) on the earth at a fixed point. We have a proven technique in this field. But we still have difficulties in the liftoff (发射) of a lunar lander on the moon. We have never tried this before,” said Yu Dengyun, deputy chief designer of China’s lunar exploration program.

The success of Chang’e-5 sample return mission has shown that China is able to carry out its plan to build a long-term crewed International Lunar Research Station (ILRS) in the lunar south pole region during 2036~2045. Success of Chang’e-5 will also see Chang’e-6 repurposed for a landing at the lunar south pole around 2023. Chang’e-6 is a sample return spacecraft engineered at the same time as Chang’e-5 to provide a backup in the event of failure.

40.Why is Brad Jolliff so excited about the lunar samples returned by Chang’e-5?

A.They are collected for the first time.

B.They are from a live volcano.

C.They will provide more valuable data.

D.They are billions of years older.

41.What can be inferred from paragraph 4?

A.China has overcome the difficulties in launching on the earth.

B.Yu was worried about Chang’e-5 sample return mission.

C.The International Lunar Research Station has been built by China.

D.The 2036~2045 mission will be much more challenging.

42.Which spacecraft is very similar to Chang’e-5?

A.Chang’e-2. B.Chang’e-3. C.Chang’e-4. D.Chang’e-6.

43.What is the best title for the text?

A.Chang’e-5 Lunar Sample Return Mission Accomplished

B.China’s Lunar Explorations in Twenty Years

C.Future Exploration Programs for Chang’e Spacecrafts

D.China’s Great Win Over the United States

Passage4

200,000 miles from Earth, the crew of the third manned mission to the Moon faced an astronaut’s worst nightmare: an explosion on the spacecraft. It’s what happened in the Oscar-winning film Apollo 13, but it’s also a true story.

The lift-off of Apollo 13 took place on 11th April 1970. Two days into the mission, the three-man crew were in big trouble. They had been carrying out routine checks when there was a loud bang. Warning lights were starting to flash. Looking out into space, they could see a trail of gas — the spacecraft was leaking oxygen. They sent out a short message to the scientists back on Earth: “Houston, we’ve had a problem here.” At first, they thought that a meteor (流星) had hit them, but they later found out that a short circuit had caused an oxygen container to explode. Whatever the cause, they knew there was no time to lose. Their electricity supply in the command module (指令舱) depended on that oxygen and pretty soon they would run out of both.

The only solution was to move into the lunar module — the section of the spacecraft that would have landed on the Moon. Now though, they were using it as a kind of lifeboat. With its own power supply, oxygen and water, the three men could survive in the lunar module and return to Earth. There was another problem though. In an enclosed space like a lunar module, the carbon dioxide the crew was breathing out was dangerous. The equipment to clear the air of carbon dioxide was only built for two people. Now it had to deal with three. Amazingly, the crew managed to build an adapter out of materials onboard to reduce the carbon dioxide to a safe level.

There was one final hindrance. The lunar module wasn’t strong enough to re-enter Earth’s atmosphere so the crew had to go back into the damaged command module. To everyone’s relief, the crew of Apollo 13 arrived safely in the South Pacific Ocean on April 17th. Although the crew didn’t land on the Moon, NASA still considered the mission a success.

44.What was the astronauts’ first reaction to the explosion?

A.They went out to land on the Moon.

B.They informed scientists on Earth.

C.They moved into the lunar module.

D.They looked into the cause of the explosion.

45.How did the astronauts solve their air situation in the lunar module?

A.By moving back to the command module.

B.By lowering the carbon dioxide level.

C.By creating a new oxygen supply.

D.By limiting the oxygen use.

46.What does the underlined word in the last paragraph mean?

A.Surprise.

B.Mission.

C.Obstacle.

D.Circumstance.

47.Which of the following can be the best title for the text?

A.A Successful Mission

B.An Amazing Adventure

C.Deep Space Exploration

D.Life-and-Death Drama in Space

Passage5

First live class held from China’s space station

Three Chinese astronauts’ amazing voices reverberated (回响) in the ground classrooms as the schoolchildren listened with attention. Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping, and Ye Guangfu delivered the lecture and it was no ordinary course. ____58____ A total of 1,420 students attended the lecture from five classrooms across China.

Assisted by the other two crew members, Wang first gave a tour around, telling students how they go about their lives and work on the space station. She showed them the microwave, water machine and refrigerator in the space kitchen. ____59____ Wang said the water they drink is recycled, noting that there is no difference in taste between regular and recycled water.

Wang said the astronauts may look a little fat and swollen (肿胀的) as the microgravity in space can affect blood circulation. ____60____ She showed the students how to increase their upper limb strength with the bike by putting her hands on the pedals and floating upside down.

In a series of experiments related to water, Wang and Ye showed the students how liquids behave differently in space due to the absence of gravitational force. In a buoyancy (浮力) experiment, Wang put a table tennis ball in a glass of water. ____61____ However, it remained in the middle of the water. Buoyancy almost disappeared in the weightless environment.

At the end of the 60-minute class, the three astronauts tried to satisfy students’ curiosity through a real-time question and answer session. How do oxygen and carbon dioxide recycle on the space station? Do stars still twinkle in space? ____62____ “ The secrets of space and science are boundless, and the future is yours,” said Zhai, commander of the Shenzhou-13 mission.

A.It didn’t float to the surface like on Earth.

B.It is made full use of on the space station.

C.They ended the class with their best wishes.

D.She opened the mini-fridge and took out a fresh apple.

E.They use a spin bike and resistance bands to stay healthy.

F.They did experiments in the weightless environment in space.

G.It came from some 400 km above Earth on China’s space station.

Passage1

As our society develops, we spend a lot on each field to make our life better than ever, such as space exploration. Given the fact that our resources are limited, more and more people begin to think about whether space exploration is a waste of money and energy. In my opinion, space exploration is of great significance and it should be considered first.

The reasons why I think so are as follows. Firstly, space exploration can display the national strength and its scientific achievements, which can boost the people's confidence. What's more, space exploration enables us to find much more resources in space, which can be used widely in the development of a country. Finally, international cooperation is required in space exploration where scientists and astronauts should work together on the mission and it in turn helps to build up a harmonious world.

In conclusion, space exploration can bring about more benefits to mankind and it should be regarded as the priority in the development of our society.
